Smart Alternatives When Flights Are Delayed: Family Travel Tips That Save the Day

If you’ve ever been stuck in an airport with restless kids, you know how frustrating flight delays can be. Here’s the good news, a delay doesn’t have to ruin your plans. With my helpful tips and a little creativity and flexibility, you can still make the most of your travel time and even turn those delays into unexpected mini adventures!

Here are some of my favorite alternative travel ideas and family-friendly ways to keep spirits high when flights are delayed.

1. Take the Scenic Route by Train or Bus

When flights get delayed or canceled, you need to consider switching to ground travel. Trains and buses are often more affordable and can offer a more relaxed experience.

When I'm in in Europe I turn to Eurail for rail passes that let me explore multiple countries without worrying about airport chaos. Back in the U.S. I turn to Amtrak which offers scenic routes that make travel part of the adventure.

Family Exploring a City

2. Turn It into a Local Mini-Trip

My worst fears are when delays stretch for hours or even overnight but instead of staying stressed at the terminal I normally explore the nearby area. Most airports these days have easy connections to local attractions, hotels, and restaurants. I like to use Google Maps Explore to find parks, museums, or family-friendly restaurants near the airport.

3. Make the Most of Airport Amenities

I've found many airports now have family zones, play areas, and lounges where you can unwind. I always check Sleeping in Airports before traveling. It’s a useful resource for finding kid-friendly amenities and quiet corners for rest.

I normally pack a few travel games, coloring books, or some small toys to keep the kids entertained. I also like to bring snacks and refillable water bottles to avoid cranky travelers (both big and small!).

Family Road Trip

4. Rent a Car and Road Trip Instead

If your flight’s been delayed for more than a few hours, consider renting a car and making it a spontaneous road trip! Companies like Enterprise or Hertz often have last-minute rentals available.

It’s a great way to turn disappointment into discovery—especially if your destination is within driving distance. Stop for fun roadside attractions, local diners, or scenic lookouts along the way.

5. Book a Nearby Hotel and Recharge

If your delay turns into an overnight stay, book a nearby family-friendly hotel and take advantage of the downtime. Many hotels offer day rates or airport shuttles for convenience.

Websites like Booking.com or Hotels.com make it easy to find last-minute deals. You can even enjoy a swim, order room service, or watch a family movie night—it’s like an unexpected mini vacation!

6. Explore Alternative Airports

If your final destination isn’t too far, consider flying into an alternative airport nearby. If you're in Los Angeles and the flight is delayed, you could fly into San Diego or Las Vegas and drive the rest of the way.

I normally use Skyscanner or Google Flights to look for alternative routes. I even use it to find open seats. Sometimes you can rebook for the same day and still make it to your destination on time.

7. Keep a “Delay Kit” Handy

Preparation is everything. I always travel with what I call my “delay kit”—a small bag filled with essentials like:

  • Snacks and reusable utensils
  • Headphones for the kids
  • Portable charger
  • Toiletries and a change of clothes
  • Travel games or coloring books

Trust me, it makes a huge difference when delays happen!

Delays can be frustrating, but they don’t have to derail your family adventure. With a little flexibility and planning, you can transform an inconvenient situation into a fun and memorable experience.

Whether it’s a spontaneous road trip, exploring a new city, or simply enjoying extra downtime together, it’s all part of the journey. And sometimes, those unplanned moments become the ones we cherish most.
